フェラ・クティというアーティストがいた。
アフロ・ビートというジャンルを作り上げ、音楽で国と戦った男だ。

1997年8月2日、フェラはエイズで逝った。世界に衝撃が走り、日本でも「こんな凄いアーティストがいたのか」と一気に注目が集まった。

この本は、腐敗した国家権力と戦い続けた一人のアフリカ人ミュージシャンの軌跡を描く。
世界に出ていくための道程、そして権力に抗うことがどんな結末を招くのか──その壮絶な記録だ。
そして何より、「めちゃくちゃカッコいい」ミュージシャンの存在を伝えてくれる。（巻末には1968～92年のディスコグラフィも掲載されている。）

刑務所からの帰還と出会い

フェラを知ったきっかけは、あるフォトジャーナリストの話だった。
「ナイジェリアに、とんでもないアーティストがいる。国に反逆して投獄され、拷問を受けたが、ようやく出所して新しいアルバムを出すらしい。日本で出さないか？」

その話を聞いた瞬間、胸が高鳴った。
過去の作品も聴いたことはなかったが、とにかく聴かなければ始まらない。

社内にあったマスターテープをカセットに落として聴いた。
『ゾンビ』──その音に打ちのめされた。一曲がとんでもなく長く、圧倒的なエネルギー。
ステージ上でフェラは、ナイジェリア軍兵士たちを「言われた通りにしか動けない、自分で考えられないゾンビ」と揶揄していたという。

50作目のリリースへ

僕が担当したのは、刑務所から出て初めての作品。
1986年作、通算50作目──
『TEACHER DON’T TEACH ME NONSENSE』。

「これはリリースしなければならない」
すぐに制作部長に直訴した。部長も「やるか！」と快諾。昔「ゾンビ」が売れたことを知っていたからだ。

宣伝にも気合いを入れたが、結果は空回り。
僕が担当した作品の中で、最も売れなかったタイトルになってしまった。
初回出荷枚数は記録的に少なく、「あり得ない！」と思ったが、それが現実だった。

ワンマン社長とも宣伝方法で衝突し、翌日マーケティング部への異動辞令。
組織とは、そういうものだ。

苦い経験、揺るがぬ尊敬

あのときは悔しかった。だが今では懐かしい。すべては経験であり、今につながっている。
善悪不二──何が良くて何が悪かったかなど、結局わからない。

ただひとつ、フェラの素晴らしさだけは揺るがない。
アフロ・ビートがどうとか、クラブシーンがどうとか、そんな枠を超えて──
彼は、めちゃくちゃカッコいいアーティストだった。

今では、世界で最も売れたアフリカ人ミュージシャンだ。それが、フェラ・クティだ。
